Getting Ship Shape

Last week I had a splendid young offender at the shop who worked tirelessly during his 2 hours with me. He painted, planted and pruned and was generally great company telling me about his film studies course where they’re studying the 2 films “Rebel without a cause” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. “Oh,” I said, thrilled to think that James Dean was being introduced to a new generation but Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, really? I must have missed the seminal bits when I fell asleep in front of it at the cinema all those years ago. I also managed to teach him the rudiments of making a hand tie which he got pretty quickly in fact his second bunch was snapped up by a customer and neighbour who’d wandered into the shop during our session and we were thrilled. He’s back next week and we’ll be doing some flower bombing as part of Mental Health Awareness week. So next week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we’ve got plenty of events happening with both Haringey and Barnet Councils. We also find out if our zero waste/farmer’s market can proceed, we’ve had plenty of interest from the public and potential stallholders and it would be sad to disappoint them all. Alan Titchmarsh has just reminded me that it’s National Gardening Day today, no not in person but from my Facebook timeline whilst sporting a rather fetching floral crown so I suppose I should do some weeding. Apparently, the optimist sees the rose and not its thorns whilst the pessimist stares at the thorns, oblivious to the rose - to be honest, I can’t actually see much more than Galium sparine (sticky weed) at the moment. I’m sure I once read that long ago the dried foliage of the plant had been used to stuff mattresses, now how’s that for zero waste! Have a great week. Ursula
